Maria Arriola, ’16
By Jacob West, Development Coordinator

Violist and composer Maria Arriola played in GTCYS for seven years, starting in Concertino and working her way up to Symphony. She had the opportunity to tour in both Spain and Argentina!
Today, Maria is pursuing a PhD in Music Composition at the University of Minnesota. She loves composing experimental and electroacoustic pieces.
She also helps organize UMN’s New Music Ensemble and is the co-artistic director of Waking the Oracle, a community arts project at UMN’s Earl Bakken Center of Healing and Spirituality.
“GTCYS served as a great launching-off point for me to study many different kinds of music practices during my time in college,” Maria said.
Maria’s favorite GTCYS memory was performing Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony in Spain in 2014.
What a thrill to sit in the viola section and hear the culmination of a year’s worth of friendship, fun, and hard work!
