A Stirring Finale to the Symphony Series

Spotlight on our Soloist

At this Saturday’s Symphony concert, audiences will be treated to an outstanding performance of Lalo’s Concerto for Cello by GTCYS’ Young Soloists Concerto Competition winner, Madeline Sheard, who thinks frequent atmospheric changes in the piece will captivate listeners. For Madeline, it evokes complex emotions – from intense to pleading to hopeful – which fuel her imagination.

“I have a mental picture of a refugee family pleading to take shelter in a new country. They have such intense emotions because they remember the good life they once had and feel intense sorrow for how it has all crumbled away. Even in their terrible stress and grief, they feel a shimmer of hope for their future.”

The concert will also feature Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 performed in its entirety. Under the direction of artistic director Mark Russell Smith, Symphony studies a big, romantic symphony each year, and this performance will be the culmination of their hard work. Madeline is excited about performing this piece with her peers and enthused that Tchaikovsky offers rich and interesting parts to every instrument. She is especially fond of the horn parts in this piece. “I’ll never hear the symphonies we’ve studied without remembering my GTCYS friends and our interpretation of that music,” Madeline said.

Madeline has been in GTCYS for two years and loves belonging to the friendly community and appreciates the opportunities to tour – she went to Argentina with GTCYS in 2016. A junior at Maple Grove Senior High School, Madeline has placed in numerous concerto competitions and was a 2017 Minnesota Varsity Showcase Artist. She’ll study at the Bowdoin International Music Festival in Maine this summer and is considering a college major is cello performance. Madeline also enjoys watching tennis, college basketball, and Olympic events with her family, quilting with her grandma, and looking for Lake Superior agates on summer road trips.
