Meet Samuel and Shyley, Our New Pathway Musicians!
The Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies is thrilled to announce the addition of two new students to our Pathway Musicians Program, Samuel White and Shyley McKinely.
Launched in 2023, GTCYS’ Pathway Musicians Program nurtures the growth and talents of Black/African American and Latinx/Hispanic music students through a comprehensive, personalized support system.
Thanks to support from our community, Pathway Musicians receive generous financial assistance, private lesson teachers, and mentoring from professional musicians to reach their fullest musical potential within GTCYS and beyond.
We’re so excited to see Samuel and Shyley’s musical and personal growth in the Pathway program!
Samuel White, trombone
Taught by Jason Tanksley, mentored by Kenneth Thompkins

“My name is Samuel White, and I am honored to share that this is my third year as a GTCYS participant. Receiving the Pathway Musician Scholarship is a significant achievement for me. As a first-generation orchestral musician, I understand the vital role that programs like the Pathway Musician Program play in my journey.
“Music, to me, is not just a hobby; it is a fundamental part of my identity and a powerful outlet for my creativity. I recognize that the path to unlocking my full potential is filled with challenges, however I believe that, with the support of my family and my GTCYS counterparts, I will exceed all goals.
“I recognize that the Pathway Musician program is more than an opportunity for growth; it stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration. I am excited to connect with tenured musicians and mentors who will guide me through this intricate landscape. Learning from those who share my passion will not only enhance my musicality, I believe it will also bolster my confidence in this demanding art form.
“Being part of a diverse group of talents inspires me to strive for collaboration and artistic expression. I look forward to this season and all that is to come. Thank you.”
Shyley McKinely, violin
Taught by Wendy Lai, mentored by Tami Lee Hughes
“My name is Shyley, and I play the violin. I started learning in fifth grade, and since then, I’ve wanted to keep getting better. I believe the Pathways program will motivate me to practice more and push myself further. Through this experience, I hope to improve my playing and feel more confident in my abilities.
“What excites me most about the program is that it makes me believe I could one day play as well as my teacher, or maybe even better. I’m looking forward to seeing the progress I make by the time I finish the program.”
