MN Rep. María Isa Pérez-Vega visits Harmony!

Minnesota Representative María Isa Pérez-Vega visited our Harmony program at Saint Paul Public Schools’ Riverview West Side School of Excellence on March 8! Harmony Director Mary Sorlie invited her for an interview with our “Take a Break with Harmony” series on YouTube, and she said yes!

In the interview, Rep. María Isa Pérez-Vega shared that she has a background in music starting from a young age. She is a professional recording and performing artist who enjoys hip hop music, R&B, jazz, Puerto Rican music, Latin percussion, and more. She looks at music “as an opportunity of creating your own canvas” and suggests that the students “listen to something new every day.” When directing a youth music program with the Mobile Jazz Project, she noticed that “we need a lot more efforts and a lot more funding to be able to fund programs like music in schools.” She enjoys being a state legislator as it gives her the opportunity to care for her community, as she grew up on the West Side of Saint Paul.
