Letter from Mx. Fischer (9/8)

Hi Sinfonia East!

It was so great to meet everyone this week and sight read some challenging music together. We read through the Tchaikovsky (Symphony No. 2, Finale) and started the Strommen (Cumberland Cross). Winds and Brass players had an introductory sectional to learn about breath support, tuning, and projecting.

Practice for next week:

Next week, we will rehearse the following. Please practice these sections before rehearsal – you should arrive having worked on notes and rhythms.

  • Listen to both pieces all the way through at least 3 times! Recordings can be found here (Tchaikovsky– starts 18 seconds in) and here (Strommen)
  • Place a star next to things that you don’t know how to do yet in both pieces
  • Strommen (Cumberland Cross) – measures 45 through 60
  • Tchaikovsky (Finale from Symphony No. 2) – beginning to letter B

General reminders and announcements:

  • Attendance is critical. Please make sure that you are at every rehearsal. If you cannot make it, fill out the absence form.
  • Please arrive 15 minutes before the start of rehearsal to allow yourself time to tune and warm up. We will always start right at 6:30.
  • There will be some modifications to the seating chart next week. Please check the new seating chart as you enter.
  • More music will be distributed soon. I love learning about the music you are interested in! If you have pieces you’d really like to play, email them to me!

Student learning support:

As you practice, you may come across musical skills that you haven’t encountered yet. You can email me for an explanation or demonstration – I’m here to help! I can play every instrument and can provide advice on anything you may need.

Winds and brass – you may be feeling challenged by the music. But, you are here because I believe that you will succeed. Stick with it, work hard, and you’ll be amazed at how much you can grow!

Challenge for the week:

Form refers to the “big picture” structure of a piece of music. There is a special musical term that describes a piece of music written in two big sections. If you can figure out what this word is and email it to me before our next rehearsal, there will be a special surprise waiting for you…

Go make music and go change the world!
