Letter from Ms. Mary (9/14)

Hey Philharmonia West!

Welcome and congratulations to a great start to our season!  We covered a lot of ground this week and I look forward to seeing and hearing the progress each Monday night. Thank you for your willingness to learn and try new things.  Yes, we all made some mistakes(myself included), but there was also a noticeable difference between the beginning and end of our rehearsal. As we are working together and learning new things, please remember that We Can Do Hard Things!

This is the first of the weekly emails that you will receive.  My letter will include some very specific passages for you to practice before our next rehearsal.  Before our retreat, I would like you to play the following passages at home:

  • Raspberry Ramble-from the beginning to letter C
  • Belvedere Suite: Folk Song- from the beginning to measure 17

You don’t need to play them fast, just be familiar with the key signature and finger patterns for each passage. Mark any finger numbers that might be helpful, as long as you mark them in pencil

Our retreat is this Saturday.  You should have received a separate email with the specifics for that day. Yes, there will be lots of rehearsing! But there will also games and time to meet and learn about other members of the orchestra.  Come well rested! I look forward to a super fun time with you.  Please remember to bring a nut-free lunch.

A reminder that every student needs to bring the following to every rehearsal:

  • Instrument
  • Music
  • Stand
  • Pencil
  • Accessories (rock stop, shoulder rest, extra strings)

Question of the week: What is the letter name of the first sharp? Send your answers to mary@gtcys.org!

It’s going to be a great year! I look forward to seeing you at the retreat!

Work hard, play hard!
