Letter from Ms. Mary (10/5)

Hey Philharmonia West,

Great first sectional of the year! It was so nice to work on and drill some very instrument-specific passages this week.  We will have a full sectional on October 26th.  Shout out to the viola section for playing with such a big and robust sound during Raspberry Ramble!

We are continuing to work on our finger and rhythm patterns.  Looking at our key signatures in each of our pieces is essential to playing with the correct finger patterns.

For this week, I would like you to focus on the C Major scale.  This finger pattern is different than D Major! There are no sharps or flats in C Major.

Before next Monday, please play the following:

  • C Major Scale: Can you come up with at least 4 different rhythm variations?
  • Prelude from Belvedere Suite: Drill measures 17-33.  This is in C Major.  There are no sharps in this section.  You’ve got the triplet rhythms.  Let’s make sure our finger patterns are 100%.

The lower string coach was cellist Daryl Carlson.  Not only does he play cello, he repairs and makes instruments.

Question of the week: What is the name for someone who makes string instruments? Send those answers to mary@gtcys.org.

Thanks everyone, for focused rehearsals, as well as doing a great job with the returning chairs at the end of rehearsal!

Have a great week. Work hard, play hard.
