Letter from Maestro Smith (9/28)

Greetings Mahlerites!

Thank you for your tremendous hard work on Monday.  Among the many things that impress me about your orchestra is the week-to-week improvement that we enjoy.  I can really tell how much at-home practicing has taken place, and (while not completely unanimous) it is a credit to you for taking the initiative to learn these difficult notes.

We have only been together for a month, but are already in a good place with the first and second movements.  Obviously, there are still many miles ahead of us, (and difficult string parts to conquer) but now comes the fun part as we continue to add character and nuance to these movements.

VERY IMPORTANT — Monday’s (October 5) rehearsal will begin with the second movement.  As announced last Monday, if you do not play in the second movement, you may arrive 45 minutes after the start of rehearsal (7:30 arrival).  If you want to come and listen for 45 minutes, you are certainly welcome to do so, but we need this time with the second movement at the beginning of rehearsal.  Please make a note of this schedule.

Each week I get more and more energized and excited about what this orchestra can do!  Let’s keep up the momentum and use these weeks in October to get grounded and well prepared for the entire symphony.

Looking forward to seeing you on Monday — and again — GREAT work!
