Letter from Maestro Smith (10/5)

Last night’s rehearsal was exciting and elucidating. It is indeed exciting to hear how far we have already traveled together, and to hear large passages of the first two movements really take shape and communicate character. It was also a reminder about the amount of continued work that each member of the orchestra must commit to in order for this group to reach its very high potential. Our slow work on the second movement was very helpful, and a good example of how to practice this piece. Break it down, use a metronome, and be brave. Playing with confidence changes everything in these difficult passages. It is so much better to dig in and make a big, loud mistake than to play without commitment.

Speaking of mistakes — I made one at the end of last night’s rehearsal. I had forgotten that next week’s rehearsal begins with strings sectionals, so we will NOT start with the second movement, as I mistakenly announced.  All non-strings will spend time getting our feet wet in a little bit of the third movement — that’s right — the third movement.

I am so pleased with the excellent focus and commitment demonstrated by everyone. There is excellent listening going on, and as you get more and more comfortable with your part, that listening will only get better. To be sure, the second movement requires chamber music-like playing, and for the most part, we are accomplishing that.

Thanks for your commitment to each other and to the music — see you Monday — MRS

Please remember that all musicians are called at 6:45.  Thank you!
