About the Instructor

Melissa McCarthy Steinberg is a private cello teacher and freelance musician, living in Woodbury, Minnesota. She began her musical studies at age 9 on organ and violin, and at age 10 was an organist at her family’s church. She began cello at age 11 and felt like she had found her true musical voice.

A Boston area native, Melissa holds bachelor's and master's degrees in cello from Boston University, where she studied with legendary pedagogue, George Neikrug. She has performed with Boston Lyric Opera, The Orchestra at Indian Hill, Portland (Maine) Symphony, Rhode Island Philharmonic, Virginia Symphony, Virginia Opera, and the Spoleto Festival (USA). Melissa has taught cello and coached chamber music at Braintree After School Conservatory, Easton Public Schools, Spencer Brook Strings, Middlesex School, and the Greater Boston Youth Symphony.

When she's not teaching or performing, Melissa is the librarian for the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.
