About the Instructor

John Rose, a native of the Twin Cities, began studying the violin at age five under the tutelage of Paul Tarabek. His early musical experiences included eleven years with the Minnesota Youth Symphonies. Today, John is an active performer throughout the Twin Cities as a chamber musician, orchestral player, soloist, and freelance artist. He is a founding member of the Catena String Quartet, a chamber ensemble performing regularly throughout the region. John has served as a section violist with the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra since 2016 and serves as Principal Violist for the St Croix Sounds Symphony Orchestra. In addition to orchestral and chamber work, he enjoys presenting solo recitals and participating in community outreach across the metro area.
John holds a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, where he studied with Dr. Sonja Bosca Harasim. While at Concordia, he served as Concertmaster of the university orchestra and appeared as a soloist in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade and in the Emmy Award–winning Concordia Christmas Concert. During his time at Concordia, John discovered his passion for the viola and went on to earn a Master of Music in Viola Performance from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, studying with Kate Hamilton. While at UNLV, he participated in masterclasses with musicians from the Berlin Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, and Los Angeles Philharmonic, and was invited to perform with the Milan Conservatory Orchestra. He also held a Graduate Assistantship in Music Theory.
In addition to performing, John is a dedicated teacher of violin, viola, and piano students of all ages with a growing studio in the Twin Cities. His students have had multiple successful auditions for youth symphony programs, community orchestras, as well as conservatory programs.
