Cello Instructor
Omar Macias is a versatile cellist, educator, and administrator based in the Twin Cities. A passionate freelancer, he performs across a wide range of genres, from classical to contemporary. Omar is a teaching artist with GTCYS’ Harmony Program, inspiring young musicians early on in their musical growth. Omar is also an adjunct professor of cello at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University, where he fosters the next generation of cellists. As a member of Son De Cuerdas, a bilingual trio blending Latin music with classical influences featuring piano, harp, and cello, Omar works to bring classical music to underrepresented communities in the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota, combining cultural outreach with artistic expression. The trio is also proud to be featured artists with MPR’s ClassNotes program, furthering their mission of engaging diverse audiences through music. Orchestrally, Omar regularly appears with the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra and Sioux City Symphony Orchestra.
Omar holds a Bachelor’s in Performance from Saint Olaf College, a Master’s in Music from the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, and a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Performance from the University of Minnesota. He has had the privilege of studying with esteemed teachers including Peter Howard, Dr. David Carter, Ross Harbaugh, and Tanya Remenikova.
