Letter from Tamara (4/9)

Hello Concertino,

Thanks for bringing your curiosity with all of those great questions for composer Autumn Maria Reed. It was so valuable to hear what was on your mind when thinking about our commissioned piece Freshwater Pirates and about what it’s like to be a composer.

Next Friday is our school tour. Please make sure to read through the logistics carefully, as we have an early call time.

As you continue to prepare for your auditions, I want to clarify the purpose of the solos list that has been compiled and shared. The list is there to provide some ideas and options as you select your repertoire.Audition judges DO NOT refer to this list at all when adjudicating and you will not be placed into a particular orchestra by selecting a solo piece from that orchestra’s list.

It is very important that each student selects a piece that they can play well and that highlights their strengths.

If you are confident in your staccato and dexterity, then perhaps select an up tempo piece that shows off that strength. If you love playing longer musical lines that are legato and flowing, then select a slower piece where you can really display that. You will ultimately do best when you play a piece you feel you have mastered.

Happy practicing!
