Letter from Ms. Mary (10/6)

Hey, Philharmonia West!

Nice rehearsal this week. There was a lot of woodshedding, focused playing and attention to details.  We spent a lot of time on the E minor scale, Tyro Tango and Ukrainian Folk Songs.  From our rehearsal on Monday night, do you remember the word(s) of the week? It has to do with scales that share the same key signature.  Hint: Think G major and E minor.

We spent a good deal of time working on the first four and last four measures of Tyro Tango.  These measures are similar. Beware of the change in rhythm patterns!  Before next Monday, please WOODSHED the following sections in Tyro Tango: D to E and E to F. Watch out for all of the dotted rhythms! Every section has dotted rhythms in these passages.

Next week, we will read through the Brandenburg Concerto, as well as continue to review the repertoire we have been focusing on.

Our symbol of the week was a decrescendo. How frequently do you see this in our repertoire?  Send me an email (mary@gtcys.org) to let me know if it is in the following pieces: Tyro Tango, Ukrainian Folk Songs and Fanfare Jubilee.

Have a great week.  Work hard, play hard.  I look forward to seeing you next Monday!

Mary Sorlie
