Letter from Ms. Mary (10/27)
Hello, Philharmonia West!
Super fun rehearsal on Monday night. A special thank you to those who helped in making our treat night so much fun. Enjoy the pictures from our break time! Shout out to the viola section this week! Great job on Kolemeka!
Fall Festival will be here before we know it. The pieces that we are performing are Ukrainian Folk Songs and Tyro Tango. This week, we spent a little time on Winter Music as well as reviewing our concert repertoire. In your practice this week, take some time to play through movement 1 in Winter Music. Careful with the rhythm and remember to follow the road map!
Practice assignment for this week:
The focus this week is spiccato! Remember to find the balance point in the bow.
- Play a D Major scale, any rhythm variation of your choosing as long as you play spiccato. I encourage you to repeat the notes to allow for a clean and beautiful spiccato. Play a minimum of 5 variations.
- Play the last movement of Ukrainian Folk Songs, focusing in the spiccato passages. Play this movement at least 4 times.
Do you remember the symbol of the week? Hint: it is not the up bow.
Question of the week: what is your favorite string articulation sound? Legato, staccato, pizzicato, spiccato, col legno…What is your favorite? Send your answer to mary@gtcys.org!
Next week, we will continue to dive deeper into Winter Music, as well as do just a bit more sight reading.
Have a great week. Work hard, play hard.
P.S Bad musical jokes are returning next week. To get you started… What’s a skeleton’s favorite instrument?
