Letter from Megen, GTCYS’ Executive Director

Dear GTCYS Families,

I want to acknowledge the uncertainty, stress, and pain many in our community are feeling due to recent events in our area. We know that families may be experiencing this moment in different ways, and that concerns about safety, travel, and daily routines are very real for many.

At GTCYS, our priority is — and always will be — the well-being of our students and families. Music is a powerful source of connection and inspiration, and our experience navigating the pandemic reinforced how important flexibility and care are in supporting young people through challenging times.

With that in mind, we are making the following temporary program accommodations so families can make choices that feel right for them:

  • Attendance flexibility: Our attendance policy will be waived for the time being. Families may decide whether to attend rehearsals and upcoming retreats without absence penalties or eligibility concerns. Please continue to report absences using your orchestra’s absence form.
  • Zoom rehearsal option: Beginning next week (January 20), rehearsals will be livestreamed via Zoom so students can follow along from home if needed.
  • Rehearsal venues: We remain in regular communication with our rehearsal venues regarding their established safety protocols. We are reviewing these practices together and will share updates if anything changes.
  • Relaxed cell phone policy: Students may keep cell phones on their person if desired; however, phones may not be used during rehearsals.

There is no “right” choice — only what works best for your family. If you need additional flexibility or support, please reach out to our staff. We stand with our students and families, and the community members who have been impacted, and GTCYS remains committed to creating a learning environment rooted in care, accessibility, and mutual respect.

Thank you for the thoughtfulness and care you show one another and our students, and for being part of the GTCYS community.

Sincerely,
Megen
