Letter from Maestro Smith (9/9)

To: The Musicians of GTCYS Philharmonic
From: Mark Russell Smith

Welcome to Philharmonic — it was an exciting night! I think we all learned a lot about what tremendous potential we have as a group, and also how challenging and exciting our repertoire will be. Thank you for your excellent focus and hard work — I am very encouraged by what I heard, and by the great bravery exhibited by all. As you know, I have high expectations of you, and I trust that you do as well.

Please spend time this week going deeper into the first movement of the Tchaikovsky. It is really tricky and sometimes does not sound like it looks on the page… please look and listen to this music during your GTCYS 10 each day.

Strings — be practicing your improvising for the Tan Dun. We need all sorts of imagination in this piece from everyone.

Congratulations on a great start — I look forward to seeing you all next Tuesday night!
