Letter from Kaiser (4/23)
Hello Camerata Vivace!
She Knows Other Worlds, Jeffrey Gibson, 2023
Thank you for a full rehearsal ahead of our Spring Community Concert! We worked through our selection of repertoire to choose from for the performance along with some audition prep tips beforehand! There are a few more spots for us to check in on before we showcase these pieces and also some details for your upcoming concerts in this update. Please read thoroughly!
GTCYS 10:
-Ode to Childhood:
- Pay special attention to bowings and articulations (Violins 3rdmeasure of Rehearsal 4, Brass at Rehearsal 1, Woodwinds before Rehearsal 6, etc.).
-Lord of the Rings:
- Strings, we cannot cover up leitmotif solo moments, like the flute and clarinet at 33 (“Concerning Hobbits”. We must bring volume down more quickly to balance. •Everyone: steady tempo awareness is crucial throughout the piece, including places like 85 (“Shortcut to Mushroom”). Check these areas with a metronome and breath before every entrance to establish pulse!
- The transition to cantabileat 156 is also a crucial moment: please look up!
- Intonation and bow control in the finale cannot let up, even though it has been after so much music! Take a breath, commit, and we will finish strong.
Spanish Dance No. 3
- Please remember every dynamic shift or change in this fast-paced piece. Many piano and mezzo piano dynamics sneak in and sometimes we approach them too strongly (29, 45, 53). Light articulations make the piece come alive!
Ballet:
- Do not allow yourself to follow the melodic line when you are the accompaniment: keep pushing ahead! The steady 1+2+, or 1-2-3 pulses must remain consistent!
- Continue to mark in your parts your role or phrase patterns in any of the Valse sections. These are quick musical ideas that only happen sometimes for 4 measures before moving to a new section of the orchestra, and you need to know when to play out or play back: use the dynamic markings to help!
