Letter from Kaiser (10/23)

Hello Camerata Vivace!

Welcome back! There is a common phrase said around classical musicians that goes, “If I don’t practice for a day I know it. If I don’t practice for two days, the critics know it. And if I don’t practice for three days the public knows it.” – Jascha Heifetz

I think the same thing goes for us as an ensemble and myself as a conductor. We needed last night’s rehearsal to just to know each other again and remember how to function. This, along with new woodwind/brass parts and string seating auditions made for a slightly hectic rehearsal. Thankfully, we have three ahead to enjoy and refine together.

GTCYS 10:

Woodwinds, Brass: Please review your new parts on the Prokofiev and Nishimura. I would like us to be back up to speed on your parts by next rehearsal.

Percussion: Start looking through the Ode to Childhood piece in particular. There is a lot to uncover and we will need you all in tip top shape.

Violins: We worked a lot on resetting our bows, extending our bows, and getting a bigger sound in rehearsal last night. I would like you to isolate moments like that in both the Prokofiev and Nishimura and grow your confidence.

Violas: Please use a metronome and continue your practice on the Prokofiev middle section in 3/4.

Cellos/Bass: Great work on your shifting in rehearsal last night: much improvement! I would like it if we could continue to work on the Prokofiev measures 49 – 53, slowly at first, then speed it up with a metronome for accuracy,

Attached are your Fall Seating Charts for Camerata Vivace. As you look at your new spots, a few reminders I would like you to read first:

  • Seating Auditions are a tool to help us learn and grow as young musicians
  • You deserve to be challenged, that is why you’re in GTCYS
  • An audition is a snapshot, not the entire photo album
  • Your seating assignments reflect your auditions AND who I think works well together

You will receive your feedback forms next week. Please take the words written by your audition judges with an open mind and excitement about your next steps as a musician.
