Letter from Jack (9/15)

Dear Concert Orchestra,

BRAVO on your hard work, attention to detail, and focus during last night’s rehearsal. Could you hear the progress? Let’s have this same energy next week!

For your personal practice this week…..

Guiding Question: What does a TENUTO marking mean? In what musical contexts might your execution of this marking change? Start to notice more about this marking and hunt for places in our music where this appears.

For next week, continue to hone in on MACRO, MICRO, MACRO practicing on Pomp and Circumstance, Singing River, and A Shakespeare Suite. Review what we learned at rehearsal this week and make a special point of reviewing our concepts of sound and musicality in Singing River.

*****Winds and Brass*****

Please note that we will play Movement I: Fanfare with Brass ONLY. Woodwind players don’t need to learn this movement. Brass students, we will rehearse this movement at the Fall retreat. Over the next two weeks, please set aside some time to prepare this movement for rehearsal.

Movement 1: Fanfare

*****STRINGS*****

Please note that there are TWO movements of A Shakespeare Suite that include strings alone. We will rehearse these movements at the FALL RETREAT, during a time when the winds, brass, and percussion are rehearsing separately. Over the next two weeks, please set aside some time to prepare these two movements for rehearsal. Recordings are listed below. You will need to acquire performance mutes for these pieces!

Movement 3:  The Princes in the Tower
