Letter from Jack (5/4)
Dear Concert Orchestra.
It’s hard to believe the year is coming to a close! I’m so proud of you for the progress you’ve made this year, and for your courage and willingness to take risks and be vulnerable with music during our time together on Monday evenings. I was smiling to myself this morning, thinking about the difference between our first rehearsal (do you remember our first play through of Singing River?) and last night’s sophisticated, focused, passionate exploration of Marquez. If you can bring that same thoughtful, focused, PASSIONATE playing to Orchestra Hall this weekend, we will be in for a very memorable Spring Festival outing.
For your GTCYS 10 (or more!) this week:
- In general, let’s work to be even more prepared for transitions and tempo changes. Any time there is a tempo change, be ready to watch me like a hawk!
- Listen to a recording and think about balance. Are there musical elements you hear
Please see the “Worklist” for Spring Festival, with a focus on Marquez.
Some of you still have some work to do with Jupiter- please make sure that you know every note by memory! Basses, Cellists, and low brass, you are especially vital to the overall ensemble of this work. Please spend some time focusing on intonation work, and playing into the center of each pitch. All players, remember to think about balance. There are many young musicians playing this concert, and the sound can quickly get out of control. Just focus on creating a beautiful, passionate performance as a team.
That’s it! I’m looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday. I’m proud of you and grateful for the impact each and every one of you has had on our orchestra this year. Let’s have a great last performance!
Jack.
