Letter from Jack (10/13)

Dear Concert Orchestra,

How good it was to make music together on Monday! I enjoyed listening to your “play-throughs” of each piece after some rehearsal. Your commitment, focus, and willingness to take risks spells great things for the rest of our season.

As you continue to solidify your parts and refine your INTONATION, please shift your focus to the concept of BALANCE in rehearsal.

BALANCE is mostly about assessing the amount of MELODIC CONTENT in your part.

At this stage of the game, start assessing the role of your part in different places of our repertoire. Do you accompany a soloist? Do you provide a secondary melody above or below the main melody? Do you play long, sustained notes? Fast, repeated notes? Long, melodic lines?

Listening to a recording will undoubtedly draw your attention towards these things.

Keep up the great work!

For next Week:

STRINGS will have seating auditions during rehearsal.

Here is the rehearsal order:

6:45-7:30: Walton: A Shakespeare Suite Movement IV (and II if time)

7:30-7:45: Still: Singing River

7:45-8:00: Break/Announcements

8:00-8:15: Still: Singing River

8:15-8:45: Elgar, Pomp and Circumstance.

Have a GREAT week. See you soon,

Jack.
