Letter from Diane (2/10)

Hello Camerata Con Brio,

We had a lot going on at rehearsal this week with string auditions but we still managed to get some good work done on the Shorey “Grieving Dreams” piece.  With only three rehearsals left before our concert, we will need to continue our focused work, so please lean in to your GTCYS 10 this week so we can hit the ground running next Tuesday.

As I mentioned in rehearsal, Wu will be with us next week, along with another guest named Madelyn who will sing with us on the Shorey piece. The vocal part was originally written for musical saw, but since saw playing is a rare skill, a vocalist is a good substitution.  I’m sure you are all wondering at this point what a musical saw sounds like, so check out this video!

Here is the program for our March 8 Concert:

  • Grieving Dreams and Celebrating Life–Philip Shorey
  • I Got Rhythm–George Gershwin, arr. Ligon
  • New World Symphony, first movement–Dvorak, arr. Isaac
  • Pirates of the Caribbean–Klaus Badelt, arr. Ricketts
  • Celebration–Ronald Bell et. al, arr. Ford

It’s an ambitious amount of music, and we are not sharing this concert with any of the other GTCYS orchestras, so we will continue to work hard in the coming rehearsals. This concert is a “family concert” so our attire is black pants or skirt (as usual), but a solid-colored shirt on top. I’ll remind you of this in the coming weeks, but you might want to check your closet for that now. Bright colors are fun if you have them!

Here is your GTCYS 10

Shorey: Please identify the challenging spots for you on this piece and prioritize these for your practice.  Do not spend time on the parts that do not need your attention.

Dvorak: This piece has been on the back burner for several weeks now, so please play through your entire part and be ready to rehearse this next week.

Celebration: EVERYONE needs to practice this piece simply to become more familiar with it. Violins, please make sure you are solid on 9-33.  Cellos review 33 and 37 where you have the melodic lead

I Got Rhythm: I will ask for soloists on the improv. Section next week.  If you are interested, be ready to play!

Pirates: Practice your challenging sections

Strings, we will have new seating ready at the beginning of rehearsal next week. Look for an email soon with the seating chart.

Stay well, have a great week and always live your life CON BRIO!
